Ski & Snowboard Holidays in La Giettaz

A ski holiday at Chalet La Giettaz offers you the flexibility to tailor your ski break the way you like it. Looking for 6 days on the piste while the kids are in ski school? Or maybe you would prefer to explore several different ski areas over the space of a few days? Or how about a quick weekend break in the snow, with a short transfer from the airport? We’ve got all 3 options covered.

A short 7-minute drive from the chalet brings you to the picture-postcard hamlet of le Plan, where you’ll find our local ski lift, offering direct access to the Portes du Mont-Blanc ski area. Le Plan is the perfect antidote to big, busy ski resorts: everything you need is within easy reach, including ski school, equipment hire and the all-important café, so you’ll be sitting on the Torraz chairlift, ready to begin your day on the piste, in no time.

"Back-Door Retreats: The cheap way to ski in the most famous resorts is to stay in a nearby village that has a lift connecting to the same pistes as its illustrious neighbour." The Observer, January 2011.

The 100km of pistes of the Portes du Mont-Blanc are more than enough for a fabulous ski holiday, but if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, why not take advantage of Chalet La Giettaz’s superb location between Megève and La Clusaz, and as one of the Val d'Arly ski villages? The chalet is a fantastic base from which to explore three different ski domains, all easily accessible within 20 minutes' drive from the Chalet and offering in total more than 800km of pistes.

The skiing at Le Plan is low-key and lovely, perfect if you don't want the hectic pace of the big resorts.

800km of Pistes on our Doorstep

The local ski lift connects to the Portes du Mont-Blanc ski domain, which itself is part of the larger Evasion Mont-Blanc area, with a total of 440km of pistes, centred around Megève and also covering Saint-Gervais and Les Contamines.

The 200km Espace Diamant is accessible from Flumet, Praz-sur-Arly, Notre-Dame de Bellecombe and Crest-Voland, all just 15 minutes drive from the chalet. Also part of this area is Les Saisies, which offers good spring skiing, just half an hour’s drive away.

The closest lifts in the 180km La Clusaz ski area are just 15 minutes' drive from the chalet, over the Col des Aravis.

And don't forget that Chamonix - one of the most famous ski resorts in the world - is less than an hour from the chalet.  We haven't even included its enormous ski area in our 800km of pistes!

Roads in the area are generally well maintained, giving you easy freedom to explore each of these superb ski areas. It’s a different kind of ski holiday, where you’re not tied to the same resort every day.

The map below shows the main chairlifts and gondolas in each of the ski areas around us.

Click on the Ski Area Info tab below to find out more about each of these world-class ski areas, or head to the foot of the page to view price details for lift passes, equipment hire, ski school and childcare.

Portes du Mont Blanc

7 minutes from Chalet la Giettaz

Our local area, the Portes du Mont Blanc, is a refreshing alternative to busy, overpriced ski resorts.  You'll find quiet pistes and friendly resort staff, and of course the beautiful views of Mont Blanc and the Aravis range will take your breath away.

An easy 7-minute drive from the chalet brings you to Le Plan, departure point for the Torraz chairlift.  At the summit, you can admire the 360º views before returning to Le Plan on a selection of blue, red and black runs, or continuing across towards Megève and Combloux.

The area is also renowned for excellent off-piste tree skiing and ski touring.  Powder days see those-in-the-know travelling from as far afield as Chamonix and Annecy to enjoy fresh tracks on our north-facing slopes.

Resort altitude: 1200m (Le Plan), 1000m (Megève, Combloux)

Highest point: 1930m (Le Torraz)

2017/18 Dates: 23/12/17 to 2/4/18 (special extended closing date due to excellent snow conditions)

Evasion Mont-Blanc

25 minutes from Chalet la Giettaz

The Portes du Mont-Blanc domain sits within the larger Evasion Mont-Blanc area, totalling an impressive 440km of pistes that stretch from Megève across to Saint-Gervais and around to Les Contamines.

The pistes here are as immaculately groomed as the stylish locals who ski on them, stopping frequently at one of the many excellent on-piste cafés and restaurants, all under the watchful gaze of magnificent Mont Blanc.

To access the larger area from La Giettaz, it is possible to ski across the Portes du Mont-Blanc to Megève, and then take the shuttle bus across town.  However, it's better value to travel to Megève by car and then access the Evasion area directly.  This way, you make the most of the more expensive lift pass and you don't have to keep an eye on the clock to catch the connecting lifts back to La Giettaz at the end of the day!

Resort altitide: 1000m (Megève, Saint-Gervais), 1200m (Les Contamines)

Highest point: 2525m (Mont Joly)

2017/18 Dates: 23/12/17 to 15/4/17

Espace Diamant

15 minutes from Chalet la Giettaz

Perhaps less well known in the UK, the Espace Diamant stretches across the Val d'Arly, with access from the villages of Flumet, Praz-sur-Arly, Notre Dame de Bellecombe, Crest-Voland and Les Saisies.

Similar to the Portes du Mont-Blanc with its characterful tree-lined pistes, the area offers family-friendly skiing at a relaxed pace. Significant investment in recent years means you’ll find plenty of fast lifts, and the area is renowned for efficient snow making and storage, meaning that Les Saisies in particular is a great resort for April skiing, with pistes normally open until the 3rd week of the month.

Resort altitude: 1000m (Praz-sur-Arly, Flumet), 1200m (Notre-Dame de Bellecombe, Crest-Voland), 1600m (Les Saisies)

Highest point: 2069m

2017/18 Dates: 23/12/17 to 20/4/17 (Les Saisies), 13/4/17 (rest of area)

La Clusaz

20 minutes from Chalet la Giettaz

A 20 minute drive from the chalet across the Col des Aravis brings you to the bustling resort of La Clusaz.  Skiers here enjoy wider "motorway" pistes, good off piste skiing and a wide selection of green and blue runs.

Resort altitude: 1000m

Highest point: 2477m (Col de Balme)

2017/18 Dates: 16/12/17 to 20/4/18

  • Lift Passes

Lift passes can either be bought online at the ski area websites, or at the kiosks that are found close to all the main departure lifts.  You will usually be charged an additional € 2 for the hands-free card, which is not usually refundable but it can be used in different resorts and saved for your next holiday!

The friendly staff will look after your little ones (age 1 and up) in a safe and fun environment, going sledging and building snowmen when the weather is good, or if not, just settling in to the cosy centre, surrounded by toys and games. Rates start at € 20 per child for 4 hours and there is also the option to have your child dropped off and/or collected from ski school.

You will find more information (in French) and a booking form at the Petits Montagnards website. As ever, if you need any help, please let us know and we will be delighted to speak to them on your behalf.
