The route for the 2018 Tour de France has now been announced. We are delighted to see that two stages of the grand boucle are passing very close to the chalet, meaning we are the ideal accommodation base to watch this iconic race as it passes through the Alps! Furthermore, the stage between Annecy and le Grand-Bornand has also been chosen for the 2018 Etape du Tour, where 10,000 amateur cyclists will ride the exact same stage as the pros themselves. Again, Chalet La Giettaz is the ideal base for accommodation got this event, with easy access to both the start and finish towns.
The Etape du Tour takes place on Sunday 8th July 2018.
The start in Annecy is approximately 40km from the chalet, while the finish in le Grand-Bornand is only 17km from us (bear in mind that road closures on the day may affect your journey - please ask us for more details).
The 169km course has a total elevation gain of over 4,100m, across 4 categorised climbs and some of the most beautiful terrain in the Savoie Mont-Blanc region. Highlights of the route include:
- beautiful Lake Annecy
- the picture-postcard Col de la Croix-Fry (just 10km from Chalet La Giettaz)
- the extremely steep climb to the Plateau des Glières, where the route tackles 1.5km of gravel track past the moving monument to the French Resistance
- the double-climb finale of the Cols du Romme and de la Colombière, before the final descent into le Grand-Bornand
At the chalet, you will find comfortable, bike-friendly accommodation, local knowledge to help you plan your route strategy, and many fellow cyclists with whom you can share your experiences of the weekend. The great advantage of our location for this Etape is that we are close enough to be within easy of the start and finish, but also surrounded by plenty of attractions and activities for non-cycling friends and family. Lastly, Bar l’Escale will be serving pre and post race dinner, with our Sunday evening barbecue now a firm favourite among guests who have returned several times!
Weekend accommodation packages for the Etape du Tour 2018 start from € 420* for a 3 night stay. Please contact us for more details and a full quote.
The two Tour de France stages that will pass closest to us take place on Tuesday 17th July and Wednesday 18th July.
Stage 10, on Tuesday, follows the same route as the Etape du Tour, as above. At its closest point to the chalet, we are 8km away, just across the Col des Aravis.
Stage 11, on Wednesday, starts in Albertville (30km from the chalet) and heads through the beautiful Beaufortain region, on its way to the finish in La Rosière.
In addition, Stage 12, on Thursday, runs from Bourg Saint-Maurice to Alpe d’Huez, via the formidable Col de la Madeleine, which again is within easy reach of the chalet: it’s roughly an hour’s drive from us to the foot of this climb.
Throughout the week at the chalet, you will find a friendly and welcoming atmosphere - we always have a good crowd in the bar for the evening TV highlights show! And we’ll always be on hand to help you plan the best way to see the race, with plenty of local knowledge and information on road closures.
7-night stays at the chalet (for the week commencing Saturday 14th July, although we can be flexible a couple of days either way, if required) start from € 735*. Again, please contact us for more details and a full quote.
* quoted prices are based on stays in Apartments Two, Nine or Ten, and include our usual package of daily breakfast delivery of fresh bread & croissants, all bed linen & towels, and private use of our sauna & jacuzzi facilities. Evening meals and drinks in the bar are available at an extra charge; please contact us for more details.
