Writing Retreats at Chalet La Giettaz

Chalet La Giettaz Writer's Retreat

Our writers retreats are run by Susanna Jones, author of The Earthquake Bird, Waterlily, The Missing Person's Guide to Love and The Illustrated Brighton Moment and When Nights Were Cold, for which she has been awarded the Crime Writers' Association Memorial Dagger, the Betty Trask Award, the John Llwellyn Rhys Prize for Literature and selected for the Fiction Uncovered Best British Novels of 2012.

As well as being a multi award-winning writer, Susanna is also a revered tutor, being both a lecturer on the highly-regarded MA Creative Writing course at Royal Holloway in London and a veteran of residential writing courses in the UK.

Susanna is highly experienced in running group classes as well as working on a one-to-one basis with writers and their manuscripts. Her personal writing talent and ability to inspire - combined with her knowledge of the craft of writing - make her the ideal person to help you take your work to the next level.

The retreats are flexible, relaxed and are there to facilitate your writing. This might mean that you want to spend your time alone writing in the privacy of your apartment, soaking up the spectacular views and then joining other writers for dinner or drinks in the evening in order to unwind; or, you might want to get involved in some personal or group writing exercises set by Susanna that focus on particular issues. However you wish to use your time, Susanna will be on hand to give you regular one-to-one consultations on your work.

At Chalet La Giettaz we give you the space to think and a level of service designed to let your best ideas develop. Writers stay in large apartments, where kitchens are stocked with fresh milk, coffee, tea, juice and jam. Bathrobes, slippers, towels and toiletries are all provided and Each morning croissants, pains au chocolat and fresh bread will be delivered to the door. Of course, you will also have full use of our on-site spa facilities.

On group retreats, each writer will have a private room, where you would never share a bathroom with any more than one other person. The apartments have large windows and balconies overlooking the valley, there is plenty of outside terrace space and a large reading and writing room which is separate from the social activity of the workshops and dining area.

In the evening we will serve you with a three-course meal in our cosy bar, where there are sofas, a fireplace and - of course - plenty of books. After dinner, you may simply want to chat and perhaps participate in brief readings, or you might wish to head back to your apartment and carry on writing - the choice is yours.

Chalet La Giettaz is nestled in the midst of a dramatic alpine landscape. During the winter, the village sits under a blanket of snow, whilst the summer brings glorious sunshine and a flourish of flora and fauna. Autumn sees the foliage turn red and gold, whilst spring plays host to snow-capped peaks and bluebird skies.

When the weather draws in, we are often in or above the cloudline, meaning you can watch them roll through the valley from the cosy comfort of your apartment. Even a storm provides a welcome spectacle, with firework displays of fork lightening on the horizon and powerful thunder reverberating through the mountain range.

In short, Chalet La Giettaz provides a truly inspirational setting for creative productivity.

The next writers group will run during the last week of April 2014, priced at 100 euros a night and including private room, group dinners and personal script consultations with Susanna Jones.
